Morgen, Freitag, den 2. November 2007, findet ab 16:00 in der FU Berlin (Dahlem) die sechste Veranstaltung im Rahmen der Einstein Lectures (“Onestone Lectures” would’ve been more consistent) statt. Zu Gast ist diesmal Prof. Martin Kemp (Oxford University) mit folgendem Vortrag:

Solids, Splashes and Folding: Spatial Visualisation in Art and Science
Modes of thinking in art and science demonstrate notable affinities in a number of key areas of spatial visualisation. These typically involve plastic or dynamic visions of forms in space. A series of telling examples will be explored, ranging from Leonardo to the present day.
The examples will be less concerned with ‘influence’ than in the defining of certain shared structures that emerge when we look at how visual intuition operates in problem-solving.

Zu Martin Kemp:

Martin Kemp is Professor of the History of Art at Oxford University.
He was trained in Natural Sciences and Art History at Cambridge University and the Courtauld Institute, London. For more than 25 years he was based in Scotland (Universities of Glasgow and St. Andrews). He also has held visiting posts in Princeton, New York, North Carolina and Los Angeles and was British Academy Wolfson Research Professor (1993-98). Kemp has written and broadcast extensively on imagery in art and science from the Renaissance to the present day. He speaks on issues of visualisation and lateral thinking to a wide range of audiences and has published on imagery in the sciences of anatomy, natural history and optics, including The Science of Art. Optical Themes in Western Art from Brunelleschi to Seurat. Leonardo da Vinci has been a major subject of books and exhibitions by Kemp, including Leonardo. He has curated a series of exhibitions on art and science, including Spectacular Bodies at the Hayward Gallery in London and Leonardo da Vinci. Experience, Experiment, Design at the Victoria and Albert Museum in 2006. He was also guest curator for Ca 1492 at the National Gallery in Washington in 1992. Increasingly, he has focused on issues of visualization, modelling and representation. He writes a regular column on ‘Science in Culture’ in Nature. The Nature essays are developed in Seen and Unseen, in which his concept of ‘structural intuitions’ is explored.

Er hat zahlreiche Bücher über Leonardo da Vinci geschrieben und ist Autor einer Kolumne im Wissenschaftsmagazin „Nature“: Martin Kemp, Professor für Kunstgeschichte an der University of Oxford, ist in diesem Semester Gastredner bei den „Einstein Lectures Dahlem“. Kemp, der an der Cambridge University und am Londoner Courtauld Institute Naturwissenschaften und Kunstgeschichte studierte, ist Kurator zahlreicher Ausstellungen über Leonardo da Vinci sowie Kunst und Wissenschaft. Sein besonderes Interesse gilt der Visualisierung in Kunst und Wissenschaft von der Renaissance bis heute. „Solids, Splashes and Folding: Spatial Visualisation in Art and Science“ ist auch Thema seines Vortrags bei der Einstein Lecture am 2.
